Obituary for Jessie L. Orlando

Jessie L. Orlando (nee Wahl) of Marlton, NJ, died March 15, 2018. Age 98. Beloved wife for 52 years of the late Michael J. Orlando. Loving mother of Michael Thomas Orlando (Helen) of Marlton, NJ; Mark Jeffrey Orlando of Point Pleasant Beach, NJ; Jesse Leigh Orlando (Karen) of Haddonfield, NJ; Leslie Ann Brock (Ben) of Elkins Park, PA and the late Paul Wallace Orlando. Also survived by 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Jessie Louise Orlando (nee Wahl) was born in 1920 at home by midwife to her parents Jacob Wallace and Beatrice Kate Wahl. Jacob was in the Navy during World War I and had met Beatrice in England. They were married after the war in the States. Jessie was born and raised in Brooklawn, NJ and was the first of three Wahl children. She graduated from Gloucester High class of 1937, had a scholarship to university but, not able to afford it, she completed one year at Peirce Business College. She found several jobs before working in the 1940’s at Campbell Soup as an accounts payable bookkeeper.

After World War II, she met and fell in love with Michael J. Orlando while the two of them were involved in Plays and Players. Michael was an Army Air Force veteran and was working in his father’s hardware store in Haddonfield. They married in October 1949 in Woodbury, NJ. After their first child Michael Thomas was born in 1951, they purchased a home in West Berlin, NJ and three more children arrived, all boys; Mark Jeffrey, Jesse Leigh, and Paul Wallace. They moved to Cherry Hill in 1959, and Jessie and Michael had their first and only girl, Leslie Ann.

Jessie was a ‘soccer mom” before the term was invented. Coordinating and transporting five children to their many activities, sports and music lessons was a fulltime job. Jessie and the Orlando’s became heavily immersed in the activities at Grace Episcopal Church in Haddonfield. She joined the Episcopal Church Woman’s St. Anne’s guild and eventually became president and later honorary president for many years. She was elected to the vestry of the church for a three-year term when she was in her late 80’s. She was on the Altar Guild for most of her Grace Church life and felt bad the last few years that she was unable to help. She was a passionate bowler and was in many leagues over her lifetime. Even in her 90’s she would occasionally bowl a 200 game and was heartbroken when she had to retire from it for health reasons.

She was a proud grandmother to seven grandchildren –Jeffrey, Kate, Corey, Jamie, Albert, Ann and Alex. She also had 6 great-grandchildren who she adored and adored her – Jack, Lily, Ella, Julia, Leah and Cecilia.

Jessie had an infectious, joyful personality that raised the spirits of all those she met. She had a quirky sense of humor and if you didn’t like puns or poetry you were in trouble. Her English background was wont to show itself, and even late in life when her memory was problematic, she would recite poems and rhymes her mother has taught her as a child. The world was a better place for her being here and she will be truly missed.

Visitation Thursday evening, March 22, from 7 PM to 9 PM at Schetter Funeral Home, 304 W. Marlton Pike, Cherry Hill, NJ 08002.
