Obituary for Shirley N. Kormondy

Shirley N. Kormondy (nee Neill) of Cherry Hill, NJ, died September 23, 2018. Age 95. Beloved wife of the late Paul Anthony Kormondy. Loving mother of Diane Stone (Bob) of Gilroy, CA; Beth Weiner (Dan) of Maple Shade, NJ; Jan Wash (Gary) of Cayce, SC and the late Brian. Devoted grandmother of John, Kevin, Jessica, Zachary, and Rebecca. Devoted great grandmother of Zachary, Jason and Colton.

She was the daughter of the late Violet “Jean” Norsworthy (Neill) and John Ward Norsworthy. Born in South Portland, Maine on July 18, 1923, her family moved to Beacon, NY when she was five years old. She was a 1941 graduate of Beacon High School and was awarded a scholarship to Iowa Wesleyan College.

The highlight of her junior year was to be invited by Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt to attend a meeting of young people to discuss the problems and needs of young people in the country. The gathering was at Mrs. Roosevelt’s cottage in Hyde Park, New York. It was an honor to meet the President’s wife down-to –earth, gracious and friendly.

While at Wesleyan, Shirley received many honors including president of both Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity and Panhellenic Council and was inducted into Iota Phi (Scholarship Fraternity) and Qui Est (an organization for Outstanding Women on Campus. In both her junior and senior years she was listed in “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities”.

On the lighter side, she played piano in an All-Girl Dance Band. The band was popular for campus “Open-Houses”, USO dances and other functions within 90-miles of campus.
After graduating from Wesleyan in 1946, she spent a year of Graduate work while working as an advisor to the Alpha Xi Delta Chapter at the University of Oklahoma.

At the end of that year she went home to marry her high school sweetheart, Paul A. Kormondy. Shirley and Paul went to the University of Arkansas, she as Secretary to The Dean of Women and he to resume his pursuit of an Engineering Degree.

In her youth, she was a Girl Scout and then as an adult she was a Girl Scout Leader and Troop Organizer in Omaha, NE and Cherry Hill. She was a resident of Cherry Hill for 56 years. She worked for Cherry Hill Public Schools for 15 years as a teacher’s aide. She enjoyed many years singing in the church choir, and putting together photo albums of her grandchildren and volunteer work. She loved baking cookies and sweets and was known as the cookie lady to children of the neighborhood. On the highlights of her retirement was her genealogy trip to Maine, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick to search for special places from her childhood and information about her ancestors.

Funeral services and interment will be held at a later date in Fishkill, NY. In lieu of flowers contributions in her memory may be made to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation 28 W. 44th Street, Suite 609, New York, NY 10036 or to 1st Presbyterian Church 50 Liberty Street, Beacon, NY 12508.
