Obituary for Joseph Nicholas Smargisso

Joseph Nicholas Smargisso of Cherry Hill, NJ, died October 2, 2018. He was 89. Beloved husband for 50 years to the late Alberta V. (nee Mattio). Loving father of Joseph A. Smargisso (Michelle) of Cherry Hill, NJ and Christa Smargisso Lain (Joseph F. Jr.) of Medford, NJ. Devoted grandfather of Giovanni, Mia Teresa, Jordana, and Nicole. Dear brother of Grace Iatarola of Philadelphia, PA.

Born and raised by his immigrant parents, Maria and Nicola, in South Philadelphia, Joseph Nicholas Smargisso was baptized at the Church of St. Rita of Cascia in 1929. As the baby brother of seven older brothers and sisters, some of Joe's fondest memories were of growing up in the old Italian neighborhood during the Great Depression. During his teens, Joe helped support his family by working on a farm while his older brothers were serving in the military during World War II. By the 1950's, Joe had joined the US Army and served during the Korean Conflict. At the end of the decade, Joe would be the first in his family to graduate college and work in the field of Advertising and Graphic Design. Joe was creative, talented, personable , but most of all sentimental. Joe was most nostalgic of his years socializing at Club Elsmoore, a down-town neighborhood dance club, where he met so many friends and his future wife. When Joe met and fell in love with Alberta Mattio, they married in 1961 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Camden. Settling down in Cherry Hill, they gave birth to son Joseph, and daughter Christa. Honorably, they raised them as children of faith in the Queen of Heaven parish. As practicing Roman Catholics, Joseph and Alberta instilled many Christian and Italian-American family values upon their loving children and ultimately, four beautiful grandchildren.

After 50 years of marriage, Alberta passed on to Heaven on October 2, 2011. On October 2, 2018, seven years to the hour, Alberta called upon Joseph, her loving husband, to join her in paradise. Joseph Nicholas Smargisso is survived by his son Joseph, and wife Candi, his daughter Christa, and husband Joe, as well as his grandchildren Giovanni, Jordana, Mia Teresa, and Nicole. Joe is also survived by his sister Grace, many nieces and nephews, and his best friend of 84 years, Basso. Joseph was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all.
