Obituary for Brett T. Berdini

Brett Berdini of Cherry Hill, NJ, died October 17, 2018. Age 28. Beloved son of Tom Berdini (Marie) of Cherry Hill, NJ and Christina Kanefsky (Gary) of Cherry Hill, NJ. Loving brother of Annalise Berdini (Thomas Philpott) of Yardley, PA; Paul Sweeney of Cherry Hill, NJ; Jane Sweeney of Cherry Hill, NJ and Noah Kanefsky of Cherry Hill, NJ. Dear grandson of Arthur Berdini of Cherry Hill, NJ; Russell and Suzette Cook of Mt. Laurel, NJ; and Norman and Sonia Kanefsky of Cherry Hill, NJ. Also survived by many loving family members.

Brett was a talented individual who excelled in a wide array of fields and disciplines. He was the kind of person who was good at everything he decided to try, and he often focused those talents on areas where he could help others in some way. He was a musician – he played guitar and drums – and he was a gifted athlete who was enthusiastic about fitness throughout his life. He played baseball, football, ice hockey, and volleyball, usually gravitating toward positions that made his parents cringe, but which offered Brett the greatest sense of excitement.

Anyone who knew Brett knew that he was passionate about the military and always wanted to serve his country, and from 2012 to 2015, Brett served as a Small Unit Infantry Squad Leader in the United States Army. He toured in Kandahar, Afghanistan and was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. During his time in the Army, he was commended as an Expert Rifleman, and was awarded numerous medals, including the Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, with Campaign Star, National Defense Service Medal, NATO Medal, and Army Service Ribbon.
He also received the Army Achievement Medal.

After Honorable Discharge from the Army, Brett decided to pursue underwater welding, a challenging field that required numerous certifications and specialized training. He achieved PADI Open Water SCUBA certification, EMT Certification, an ANSI/ACDE Commercial Diver Certification Card, Board of Canada Unrestricted Surface Supplied Diver Certification, certification in ASME Pressure Vessel Code Welding, and numerous other certifications. As usual, he excelled in achieving his goals and was able to work as an underwater welder before shifting focus and becoming a Boilermaker/Welder with The Energy Company.

While he enjoyed welding and had found a work family with his colleagues, Brett realized he wanted to apply his skills to an area where he could help others and further serve his community, so he had begun the process of applying to be a Firefighter with the Cherry Hill Fire Department. He passed the physical and written exams and was in the final stages of the interview process for acceptance to the academy.

Brett loved all things smaller and less protected in life, be they people or animals, and he volunteered with the Animal Welfare Association when he was able.

To say the world lost a bright light does not do justice to the impact he had on our lives, and which he leaves as his legacy. Brett lived large, full-on, commanding attention and seizing every opportunity to show us just how awesome life can be! And that is how he would insist we all continue living, honoring his memory with epic adventures of our own.

Relatives and friends will gather Thursday afternoon 4 to 6:45pm at The Marian House, 507 S. Kings Hwy, Cherry Hill, NJ 08034. Funeral service 7pm. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to The Bob Woodruff Foundation 1350 Broadway, Suite 905, New York, NY 10018.
