Obituary for Kathleen Mastrogiovanni

On June 15, 2018 Kathleen Mastrogiovanni , 70 of Cherry Hill, NJ, lost her life-long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Kathleen was diagnosed at age 20 after 2 years of symptoms. She was a beloved wife, sister, aunt, and friend to so many. She was born in Philadelphia, PA on January 23, 1948 to Albert and Lillian Cusanno. She was a kind and gentle soul who touched many lives. She studied music; graduating from St. Maria Goretti High School and began her career at the Defense Personnel Support Center where she became a legal secretary.

Upon her retirement on disability for progressive MS in May 1975, she felt fortunate she had an opportunity to help others while she was still ambulatory. She joined the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Greater Delaware Valley Chapter in Philadelphia as a volunteer and counseled others who had been diagnosed. On May 14, 1983 she was honored to receive the Societies Margean Gary Foster award for outstanding volunteer service to the community. She continued volunteer service until 1989 when it became impossible. Her team “The Love Connection” still walks in the MS Walk annually.

Kathleen enjoyed travel to 27 of the United States and Mexico with her husband and 5 different islands and this did not include several trips to Bermuda, her favorite. There were 5 cruises which she enjoyed before her MS progressed to the point where overnight travel was precluded. She continued to travel locally and visit family and friends whenever possible. In addition to travel, she enjoyed the theater, concerts and live shows with all the great stars. Broadway shows were enjoyed on trips to New York or Philadelphia. Many performances of The Philly Pops, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Barry Manilow and Josh Groban were some of her favorites. The sporting events she attended included road trips with the Flyers, many Phillies games and the Sixers and Eagles occasionally.

Kathy enjoyed a 50 year marriage to her loving husband Robert, an Internal Revenue Agent, accountant and teacher in Philadelphia and Cherry Hill. She is also survived by her dear sisters Susan Francis (Charles); Patricia Guarino (Joseph) and Charles Cusanno (Michelle). Kathy and Robert loved their nieces and nephews including 10 great nieces and nephews.

Kathleen and Robert will be perpetually grateful to the amazing caregivers who helped her do all the activities of daily living and accomplish as much as she did in life despite disability: Wanda and Charlotte are chief among the wonderful caregivers who came into our home to help.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her viewing Wednesday evening 7 to 9 PM and Thursday morning 9:15 to 10:15 AM in the Schetter Funeral Home 304 W. Marlton Pike, Cherry Hill, NJ 08002. Mass of Christian Burial 11 AM at Holy Eucharist Church, 344 Kresson Road, Cherry Hill, NJ 08034. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, PA.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Well Spouse Assoc., Support Group, 63 W. Main Street, Suite H, Freehold, NJ 07728 and the National MS Society Delaware Valley Chapter, 30 S. 17th Street, Suite 800, Philadelphia, PA 19103.
